Jan Bakker, Editor of the Journal of Critical Care which is the official publication of WFSICCM, is interested in receiving submissions about development of Intensive and Critical Care in countries around the world.

He is particularly interested in stories from emerging and limited resource countries. Please consider sharing the history of Intensive and Critical Care in your country. Doctor Ricard Ferrer Roca

SEMICYUC

On behalf of the Spanish Society of Intensive Critical Care Medicine and Coronary Units (SEMICYUC), we are honoured to present, as a candidate for the WFSICCM Council, our current Past President, Dr Ricard Ferrer.

Dr. Ricard Ferrer is Head of the Intensive Care Department at Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona, Spain. He graduated in 1992 from the University of Barcelona, Medical School, and pursued his specialisation in Intensive Care, from 1994 to 1998, and his PhD title in 2010 from the Universitat Autonoma of Barcelona.

Having published a variety of original articles hitherto and currently reviewing in peer reviewed journal in the field of sepsis and severe infections, Dr. Ferrer has also contributed to the publication of book chapters on those topics.

Prof. Ferrer holds several positions at numerous Intensive Care Societies: He is Past President of the Spanish Society of Intensive Critical Care Medicine and Coronary Units (SEMICYUC) and member of the steering committee of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign.

In the ESICM, he is Chairman of the Systemic Inflammation and Sepsis section, organizer of the NEXT fellowship in Infectious Diseases in Barcelona as well as member of the Council.

We believe, Dr. Ferrer could be a very strong candidature for the WFSICCM.

Nestor Omar Raimondi

Sociedad Argentina de Terapia Intensiva

Dr Raimondi has been a critical care professional for over 30 years now. He completed his fellowship at the ‘Hospital Fernandez’ in Buenos Aires city, Argentina, where he is now the Head of the Intensive Care Division.

He joined the Argentine Society of Intensive Care (SATI) in 1991, holding several positions such as, Vice-President (2011-2013), President (2013-2015), Past President (2015-2017), leading several scientific and academic committees, organizing numerous congresses, and serving as Treasurer of the WFICC Congress held in Argentina in 2005. A major accomplishment is his implementation of the FCCS course throughout Argentina and Latin-America.

He has also focused on implementing a better organizational structure of SATI, improving the e-learning platform enabling professionals all over the Argentina to have access to critical care knowledge, training and relationship.

He has been contributing to the FEPIMCTI, being SATI a member, through various roles since 2007, such as Treasurer (2007-2011), Vice-President (2011-2016) and President (2016-2020). Currently he serves as Past-President since January 2021. He has led a profound reorganization of FEPIMCTI, implementing Expert Committees, allowing a higher scientific and academic productions of the different critical care sub-specialties.

Dr. Raimondi has authored/co-authored multiple scientific papers, peer reviewed articles and books published by SATI and other institutions. As a recognized expert, he has given numerous lectures at national and international conferences.

He has received several honors: Premio Presidente, four Presidential Citation Awards, Peter Safar Global Partner Award in 2019, and has been inducted as FCCM in 2001 and MCCM in 2018. He has been built a very solid relationships among critical care colleagues worldwide. I am very proud to nominate Dr. Raimondi as a Council member of the WFICC. I am confident that he will serve the WFICC with the same dedication and highest standards demonstrated in his previous responsibilities and endeavours.

Gee Young Suh

The Korean Society of Critical Care Medicine

Dr Gee Young Suh is a pulmonary and critical care medicine physician working at Samsung Medical Center, affiliated with Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine. Throughout his career he has worked diligently to promote improvement in standards of critical/intensive care. He was instrumental in establishing the critical care training system in Korea as the Director of Training of Korean Society of Critical Care Medicine when the Korean Society established the “Subspecialty Board for Critical Care” in 2009. He also co-chaired the inaugural “SCCM’s Multidisciplinary Critical Care Review Course” in 2009 with Dr Pastores of SCCM and was one of the driving forces behind this successful educational course. In 2013, he established and chaired the first clinical department dedicated to critical/intensive care in South Korea; Department of Critical Care Medicine, Samsung Medical Center. He was the Treasurer during the WFSICCM congress in Seoul in 2015. He is former Vice-President and currently President-elect of the Korean Society of Critical Care Medicine.

He is author of more than 250 papers indexed in Pubmed. His main interest in research is ventilator-induced lung injury, respiratory failure, sepsis, and ICU rehabilitation. Currently, he is one of the principal investigators of Korean Sepsis Alliance and principal investigator of EVER study, a multicenter randomized-controlled study on early mobilization and ICU rehabilitation that is funded by the Korean government.

Because of his long history of his interest in academism, education, and leadership in critical/intensive care, the Korean Society of Critical Care Medicine think he will make a great council and will greatly contribute to growth of the World Federation, thus we would like to nominate him for the Council seat.

Maja SoStaric

Slovenian Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Medicine

Assoc. prof. Maja Šoštarič holds a dual specialist license, that is the specialist of intensive medicine as well as the specialist of anaesthesiology and reanimatology. She is working at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana which is the largest university hospital in Slovenia. She has been the head of cardiovascular anaesthesia and intensive care for 15 years.

Every year around 1,000 cardiac surgery patients are treated in their intensive care unit. The intensive care unit run by assoc. prof. Maja Šoštarič is the leading and the only one in the Republic of Slovenia in the field of complex heart operations, mechanical circulatory support and heart transplantation. New methods of hemodynamic monitoring and monitoring of coagulation disorders have been introduced under her leadership over the past ten years. Cardiac intensive care unit is also leading in education of perioperative transoesophageal echocardiography.

The field of her research is improving treatment of patients after cardiac surgery and is mainly focused on the patient blood management, coagulation disorders, multimodal pain therapy, less invasive cardiac surgery and early recovery after surgery protocols.

Assoc. prof. Maja Šoštarič is a mentor to residents of anaesthesiology and intensive medicine and a mentor to postgraduate research students. She is also the head of Department of anaesthesiology and reanimatology at Medical Faculty, University of Ljubljana.

She was the president of Slovenian Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive medicine, and she is still the head of the expert council of the Society. Since 2017 she is the president of the main expert council at the Slovenian Medical Association.

Due to prof. Šoštarič vast experience in research, teaching, organisational leadership and governance as well as strong clinical focus in the intensive care, the Slovenian Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Medicine nominates her for the Council member position of the World Federation of Intensive and Critical Care.

Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine

Dr Deepak Govil is the current president of ISCCM and The Chancellor of the Indian College of Critical Care Medicine. He is working as Director - Critical Care at Medanta The Medicity, Gurgaon India.

He has served ISCCM in various capacities including, Vice President, Vice-Chancellor, Controller of Examinations, Accreditation Secretary, Associate Editor of Indian Journal of Critical Care Medicine.

He is examiner and teacher of various Critical Care training programs. He has written many chapters and authored many guidelines and published many articles in field of critical care medicine. He has organized many national and international conferences and workshops. ISCCM is nominating him as traditionally the then-president represents the ISCCM in WFICC.

Dr. Alison Fox-Robichaud, BSc, MSc, MD, FRCPC (Int Med, Crit Care)

Canadian Critical Care Society

Dr. Fox-Robichaud (she/her) is Professor of Medicine at McMaster University and a Critical Medicine Specialist and Director of Medical Education at Hamilton Health Sciences. She completed a BSc in Biology and Chemistry and a MSc in Medical Sciences before attending medical school. She has post graduate training in Internal Medicine and Critical Care as well as completing 2 Postdoctoral research fellowships before joining McMaster as faculty in 2000.

Her research interests include the pathophysiology of sepsis and how evidence is transferred into clinical care. She is the Scientific Director of Sepsis Canada, a nationally funded collaborative of 200 scientists, knowledge users, patients and carers. Her more than 100 peer-reviewed publications reflect a broad engagement in academic medicine. She has been honoured nationally for her work in electronic early warning scores to prevent patient deterioration. Internationally, in 2018 the Global Sepsis Alliance awarded her an individual award for her sepsis leadership.

Dr Fox-Robichaud is leader within our community. She is the past president of the Canadian Critical Care Society (CCCS) and inaugural president of the Canadian Sepsis Foundation. She is the immediate past chair of the Canadian Critical Care Examination board. She is an executive member of the Canadian Critical Care Translational Biology Group and represents Sepsis Canada and the CCCS of the Canadian Critical Care Trials Group. Internationally, she is a member of Global Sepsis Alliance board, and she was recently elected to the advisory board of the International Society for Rapid Response Systems. She has an active presence on Twitter (@drfoxrob) that she uses to advocate for critical care and sepsis patients and on issues of equity, diversity and inclusion.

For these reasons the executive of the Canadian Critical Society fully endorses Dr. Fox-Robichaud’s nomination to the World Federation of Intensive and Critical Care council.

Javier Perez Fernandez, MD, FCCM, FCCP

Society of Critical Care Medicine

Dr. Javier Pérez-Fernández is the Medical Director of the Critical Care Services at Baptist Hospital of Miami. He manages a large group of critical care physicians, Intensive Care Solutions. Through the Company he has brought comprehensive Critical Care Medicine to ten hospitals in South Florida, more than 15 ICUs and over 550 beds.

He is involved in education, being the Director for the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program at Larkin University School of Medicine. In addition, he is the Associate Director of the Critical Care Medicine and Sleep Medicine Fellowships. He also serves as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at Florida International University, Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.

In his community, he has been directly involved in the development of Rapid Response Teams, digital transformation and “open ICU” models. He has also been instrumental during the COVID-19 pandemic in implementing management plans in many hospitals in the region and he has served as a spoke-person for several local and national media networks in transmitting information to the community. In his role as educator, he carries direct clinical teaching responsibilities and oversees the formation of six fellows per year.

He is the Treasurer and Chair of the Rapid Response Team Committee at the Federación Panamericana e Ibérica de Sociedades de Medicina Crítica y Cuidados Intensivos and he chairs the SCCM Latin Leaders Committee.

The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) is pleased to nominate Javier Perez-Fernandez, MD, FCCM, FCCP, as a candidate to the World Federation of Intensive and Critical Care council. Dr. Perez-Fernandez has been a dedicated member and key leader for SCCMs various fundamental and ultrasound courses internationally, and has represented SCCM at the Pan American Federation. Dr. Pérez-Fernández is the author of many original publications and is one of the editors of SCCMs FCCS, 7th Edition, which is currently in press. Joseph L. Nates

Federacion Panamericana e Iberica de Medicina Critica y Terapia Intensiva (FEPIMCTI)

Dr. Joseph L. Nates is a professor at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Nates is the Deputy Chair of the Department of Critical Care in the Division of Anaesthesiology, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine. Dr. Nates is also the Medical Director of the 52-bed Oncologic Surgical and Medical Intensive Care Units and the Founder and President of the Oncologic Critical Care Network (ONCCC-R-NET), a global organization dedicated to the advancement of oncologic critical care research and education.

Dr. Nates is the Scientific Director of FEPIMCTI and leads the work of twenty different international expert’s committees.

For the Federation, expert committees are the basis of scientific knowledge and research. We consider that Dr Nates meets the requirements due to his professional profile to represent a Federation that includes 25 Scientific Societies of Intensive Medicine. It is an opportunity to be represented in the WFICC Council and to be able to work together in the development of Intensive Medicine.

Melda Turkoglu

Turkish Society of Medical and Surgical Intensive Care Medicine

Melda Turkoglu is associate professor and full-time intensivist in Gazi University School of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine (ICM). She is the current president of Turkish Society of Medical and Surgical Intensive Care Medicine.

She has been working for the development of intensive care in Turkey for many years. After her graduation from intensive care fellowship program, she founded medical Intensive Care Unit in Gazi University Hospital. She is one of the founding members of our society. She worked in different positions in the society. She has been working in the executive board of the society since 2013, as the treasurer from 2013-2018 and the president from 2018 until now. She participated and leaded several activities in the society. During her presidency, she contributed a lot to the society and worked for development of intensive care. She is our candidate, because she is experienced, hard-working and well-appointed person.

Tobias Schuerholz

German Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI)

My motivation to candidate originates from almost 25 years work on ICU across Germany. The fight against sepsis and infection was always a driving force and I was assured when I experienced ICU training within the Departments of Konrad Reinhart in Jena, and Gernot Marx in Aachen, Germany.

I’m convinced that within the last two years of the COVID19 pandemic, intensive care received the special public awareness it is worthy of. But there is a lot of work in front of us until intensive care can compete with other parts of medicine in terms of publicity.

The DGAI has more and more focused intensive care within the last years. As a member of the scientific working group on intensive care of the DGAI, I participated in publications, scientific congress programs and other activities. I was taking part in developing theses for future development of intensive care in Germany within the think tank “Intensive Care Medicine” of the DGAI. Additionally, I was acting as the speaker of the DIVI-section of systemic infection and sepsis and contributed to the success of the yearly congress of the society.

These activities taught me that the continuing development of intensive care in terms of scientific projects, staff training and education, and public

The WFICC should be more visible to healthcare professionals and lay persons in all participating countries with the help of their societies. This is true not only for the country level but also for the hospital level.

Giacomo Grasselli

Italian Society of Anaesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care

Prof. Giacomo Grasselli is Associate Professor of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at the University of Milan (Italy). Since 2015 he has been the Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit of the Policlinico Maggiore Hospital in Milan (Italy), a tertiary referral centre for the treatment of patients with acute respiratory failure and with an extensive research experience in the fields of mechanical ventilation, respiratory physiology and extracorporeal respiratory support. His main research and professional interests include acute respiratory failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome, ECMO support and sepsis.

He is one of the coordinators of the Italian ECMO Network and of the COVID-19 Lombardy Crisis Unit. He is now coordinating the Regional Network of COVID-19 ICUs in Lombardy, that is the Italian Region with the highest number of COVID-19 cases.

He was the Italian National Representative in the Council of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) between 2016 and 2019 and he is currently chairing the Intensive Care Section of the Italian Society of Anaesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation, and Intensive Care (SIAARTI).

He collaborates with several international research groups, and he is a speaker and moderator in several international meetings.

For his expertise and networking skills, SIAARTI considers Prof. Grasselli one of the most qualified intensivist in Italy and the best Italian candidate for election to the WFICC Council.

Prof Dean Gopalan

Critical Care Society fo Southern Africa

It is our pleasure to nominate Prof Dean Gopalan for the council of WFICC. He has been actively involved in critical care at a local, provincial, national and international level since 1997 with roles spanning the clinical, teaching, research, management and leadership domains in critical care.

Prof Gopalan is a board-registered intensivist and functions as intensivist in clinical practice at two tertiary level ICUs at in Durban, South Africa. He currently serves as President of the Critical Care Society of Southern Africa (CCSSA), having served as a member of its national executive since 2002. He is also currently a member of the CCSSA Board of Directors. Additionally, he serves as professor and Head of Discipline of Anaesthesiology & Critical Care, UKZN, Durban.

Prof Gopalan played a key role in developing the national subspecialist examination in 2001, being actively involved in the development of the national curriculum, chairing the examination committee for many years and being part of the first examination panel. He has served as examiner, convenor and moderator throughout, and initiated the development of the Committee of Critical Care, an intercollegiate board, at the CMSA to manage national assessments in critical care, serving as its first chairperson. He remains active on the CMSA, having recently completed two terms as the President of the College of Anaesthetists of South Africa, and currently serves as chair of the Education Committee and as a member of Board of Directors and Senate of CMSA.

He is an active researcher having completed his PhD thesis on Decision-making in ICU. He served as co-PI of the recent ACCCOS trial published in The Lancet. He was also a founding member of ACART (Acute Care Africa: Research and Training), involved in training and research in low and low/middle income countries in Africa. He serves as associate editor and reviewer of numerous national and international journals.

Prof Gopalan is an excellent speaker regularly involved in national and international meetings. He is an accomplished teacher, actively involved in teaching at all levels, including registrars, subspecialists, nurses and allied disciplines. He has been involved in training across South Africa and in Nigeria, Kenya and Zimbabwe and has also been part of CMEs in Australia, Philippines and Vietnam. He served as Co-Chair of the Organizing Committee World Critical Care Conference, Durban, 2013, delivering a successful congress and has been on numerous organising committees of national conferences and courses.

Prof Gopalan’s numerous contributions as clinician, teacher, researcher, manager and leader in critical care with a national and international profile, make him an excellent candidate to significantly contribute to WFICC as an elected council member.

Dr See Kay Choong will be our next President. We would strongly recommend Dr See Kay Choong for WFICC. Dr See has won many awards & grants and with his current appointment as Head & Senior Consultant, Division of Respiratory & Critical Care Medicine, Department of Medicine, National University Hospital.

Emily Tegnell

SFAI Swedish Society of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care

Emily would be an asset to the WFICC council, being flexible, goal-oriented and having outstanding team-working skills. Her ability to establish new contacts and 'get things done' will enable her common ambition with the WFICC, to provide more people with the safe critical care that we all need and are entitled to.

Emily has always had an interest in Global Health and unequal resource distribution within healthcare, motivating her voluntary work, exchange programs and internships on four different continents. This has maintained her interest in cultures and been highly motivational.

Growing up and traveling in different countries and with many experiences of various cultures, Emily is at home almost anywhere. At the moment her home is in Gothenburg, Sweden, where she is completing her CCST in anaesthesiology and intensive care. Outside of work she plays the cello and works as a yoga teacher. Before moving to Gothenburg she studied Biotechnology in Lund, Sweden and medicine in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Dr. Saidu Yakubu

Dr Saidu Yusuf Yakubu, MBBS, DA, FWACS is a Senior Lecturer and Consultant Anaesthetist at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU)/Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) Zaria, Nigeria. He has been the Head of Anaesthesia and Critical Care in ABU/ABUTH Zaria since 2017.

Dr Yakubu is a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS), Member of the Intensive and Critical Care Society of Nigeria (I-CCSN) and served as the Assistant General Secretary of the organization during the period, 2016-2019. He was recently elected as a board member of the Faculty of Anaesthesia of the West African College of Surgeons.

In October, 2019, he won the first-ever International Rising Star Award of the World Federation of Intensive & Critical Care for Best Poster from LMIC during the 14th World Congress of intensive Care held in Melbourne, Australia.

Dr Yakubu played a critical role as an investigator in the survey and documentation of the “State of Critical Care Services in Nigeria” conducted from October, 2019 to April, 2020, the manuscript of which has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Critical Care.

He is the current Treasurer of the Nigerian Society of Anaesthetists (NSA) and the North-West Zonal Coordinator of the Society.

His interests lie in Critical Care, Safety in Anaesthesia and Pain Management.

The I-CCSN is nominating Dr. Yakubu because he is an astute team player and has capacity for new ideas to improve the Critical Care service delivery in LMICs.

Dr Sherif Mokhtar

Dr Mokhtar has graduated from Cairo University School of medicine where he had his residency and MD Degree in Cardiology. He received his post-doctoral fellowship of Critical Care Medicine at USC, Los Angeles under the mentorship of Dr Max Weil.

On his return to Egypt, Dr Mokhtar has been an advocate to pioneer and advance the science and practice of Critical Care Medicine in Egypt. Through his leadership, scientific background, dedication and tireless efforts, the first Critical Care center in Egypt was inaugurated at Cairo University School of medicine in 1982. Through years, this center has established itself as the most reputed and dedicated medical facility and also an educational institution which trained key intensivists not only in Egypt but the Arab World as well.

The center is unique in incorporating critical care cardiology through 3 Cath labs, EP studies and pace maker implantation.

In appreciation to his achievements, Dr Mokhtar has been awarded several eminent scientific awards including the eminent Egyptian Award of Merit in Medical Sciences (2004) Several accomplishments has been made in the critical care practice as the center has pioneered in the implantation of cardiac interventional procedures as part of its services , molecular biology research, ICU informatics and executing projects of national interest such as the Sudden Cardiac death project (SCD) which aims to study SCD risk factors in Egyptian population. His scientific contributions are numerous ranging from supervising 82 Master Degrees, 108 Doctorate Degrees, establishing the Egyptian journal of Critical Care Medicine and organizing several national international conferences and courses.

Dr Mokhtar is Editor in Chief of the Egyptian Journal a quarterly publication published by Wolters Klower since 2016

Italian Society of Anaesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care

Prof. Giacomo Grasselli is Associate Professor of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at the University of Milan (Italy). Since 2015 he has been the Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit of the Policlinico Maggiore Hospital in Milan (Italy), a tertiary referral centre for the treatment of patients with acute respiratory failure and with an extensive research experience in the fields of mechanical ventilation, respiratory physiology and extracorporeal respiratory support. His main research and professional interests include acute respiratory failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome, ECMO support and sepsis.

He is one of the coordinators of the Italian ECMO Network and of the COVID-19 Lombardy Crisis Unit. He is now coordinating the Regional Network of COVID-19 ICUs in Lombardy, that is the Italian Region with the highest number of COVID-19 cases.

He was the Italian National Representative in the Council of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) between 2016 and 2019 and he is currently chairing the Intensive Care Section of the Italian Society of Anaesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation, and Intensive Care (SIAARTI).

He collaborates with several international research groups, and he is a speaker and moderator in several international meetings.

For his expertise and networking skills, SIAARTI considers Prof. Grasselli one of the most qualified intensivist in Italy and the best Italian candidate for election to the WFICC Council.
